Scholarship Recipient Guidelines
The $5,000 scholarship will be given to a student graduating from an Alabama high school in 2014. If the winning alum did not attend high school in Alabama, they will have the opportunity to choose a school in Alabama that will receive the scholarship in their name. The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the leaders of the alum’s high school alma mater. The recipient must be planning to attend one of the 26 ACCS member colleges.
Terms & Conditions
This contest is sponsored by the Alabama Community College System (“ACCS”) Presidents Association. There are two phases to this contest. The first phase (hereinafter referred to as the “Alumni Selection” phase) is open to individuals who have attended one of the ACCS member colleges for at least two semesters. Eligible participants must submit via this website their response to the question: How have you used the education you received as an ACCS student to strengthen your life, your community and our state?
Alumni may submit their responses through this website by video or in writing. Videos must be no longer than 4 minutes, and written submissions should not exceed 750 words. The deadline for submissions as part of this contest is January 10, 2014.
A panel of six ACCS college presidents (hereinafter referred to as the “Selection Panel”) will determine the Alumni Selection phase finalists. Input from the ACCS community will be solicited through social media to help choose a winner. Finalists will be selected by January 24, 2014.
For the second phase of this contest, if the winner of the Alumni Selection phase attended a high school in Alabama, then the leadership of that high school shall select a student to receive a $5,000 scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the “Scholarship Award” phase). If the winner of the Alumni Selection phase did not attend a high school in Alabama, he/she will have the opportunity to choose a high school in Alabama through whom the Scholarship Award will be made to an eligible student.
The student selected to receive the scholarship must graduate in the spring of 2014, and must attend one of the ACCS member colleges in order to receive the scholarship. The student must also be a United States citizen or must be otherwise eligible for admission per Alabama State Board of Education policy.
Individuals who are under the age of 19 must have the written consent of their parent or legal guardian to participate in this contest. Your parent or legal guardian must read and agree to these terms and conditions and grant you permission to participate. Individuals who are currently eligible to receive a tuition waiver at an ACCS member college are not eligible to receive the Scholarship Award.
The $5,000 scholarship awarded as part of this contest will cover, until it is expended, tuition, fees, and books. The scholarship funds will be provided and held as a credit on the winning student’s account at the ACCS member college where that student matriculates. Cash will not be provided to the student. If the student transfers to another ACCS member college before the scholarship funds are fully expended, then any remaining balance shall be transferred to the transferee ACCS member college and shall be held as a credit on the student’s account at the transferee college until the funds are fully expended.
If the student ceases attending an ACCS member college for any reason, with the exception of military service, for more than two consecutive semesters, not counting summer semesters, then the student will forfeit the remaining portion of the scholarship funds and said remaining funds shall be returned to the Alabama Community College System Presidents Association. Notwithstanding the forgoing, the student may request in writing to the President of the ACCS member college where he/she was attending that he/she be allowed to continue to receive the benefit of the Scholarship Award, until it is fully expended, despite having to miss more than two consecutive semesters, not counting summer semesters. The President, in his/her sole discretion, may approve such a request for good cause shown.
Eligibility to participate in both phases of this contest will be separately verified through means selected by the Selection Panel or its designee, in its sole discretion. By entering into this contest, you hereby authorize the Selection Panel or its designee to obtain any educational records it deems necessary for such verification, and you authorize any ACCS member college or other educational entity to release such educational records to the Selection Panel or its designee. You specifically waive any claims against the Selection Panel and/or its designee, and the ACCS member college and/or its designee employees, for violations of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) and/or any other applicable state or federal privacy laws or regulations.
